Mount Mitchell Summit Hike
Last-minute hike up Mount Mitchell. 12 miles out and back with 3,700 ft elevation gain.
This is a bit of a last-minute hike, but I wanted to put it out there in case anyone is up for a challenge 😊
We’ll be hiking Mount Mitchell via the Mount Mitchell Trail (out and back). This is a great training hike with steady elevation gain and a rewarding summit at the top.
The trail climbs through forest most of the way and is a consistent uphill, so come prepared for a solid workout.
Details:
• Distance: ~12 miles out and back
• Elevation Gain: ~3,700 ft
• Rating: Difficult
This is not a beginner hike. Please be comfortable with longer mileage and sustained elevation gain.

FOR HIKING EVENTS:
Due to local guidelines, and in accordance with Leave No Trace Principles, Women Who Explore limits the number of attendees for hiking or outdoor events. To make sure we are following local guidelines, every attendee must register through Eventbrite. In the event you successfully register, and then are unable to attend, please release the ticket so that another member may attend.

TRAIL PERMITS (IF NEEDED):
No permit required.
PARKING PASS:
No parking pass required at the Black Mountain Campground trailhead. Google Maps shows South Toe River Road as closed, but it is currently open.
TRAILHEAD DIRECTIONS:

From the Blue Ridge Parkway, pass the road to Mount Mitchell and continue to South Toe River Road. It will be on your left if you’re coming from Asheville.
Plan to arrive by 8:00 AM. We will begin hiking shortly after.
PACE / EXPECTATIONS:
We’ll be keeping a steady pace to stay on track for the day.
You should be comfortable with:
• Hiking 10+ miles
• Sustained uphill climbing
• Being on trail for several hours
We’ll regroup as needed, but this is not intended to be a slow or beginner-friendly hike.
WHAT TO BRING:

• Pack your full supply of water for the day (at least 3 liters recommended)
• Pack extra snacks & a lunch
• Dress in layers (temps can be much colder at the summit)
• Rain jacket
• Proper hiking shoes/boots with good traction
• Backpack for layers and food
• Hiking poles (recommended)
• Headlamp or flashlight (recommended for longer hikes)
• Personal hygiene kit
If you are attending an outdoor event, please make sure to brush up on the Leave No Trace Principles HERE.
ALL EVENTS:
PLEASE NOTE: Ambassadors are not wilderness first aid certified. This is a casual get together for shared outdoor enthusiasts. Safety is a top priority; please plan accordingly.

Please be mindful of other members attending the events. If you have developed cold or flu-like symptoms leading up to the event, please cancel your spot in Eventbrite and notify the ambassador hosting the event.
CANCELLATION POLICY:
If you are registering for one of our group events, we ask that you are 100% committed to attending when you register. If you reserve a spot and are unable to attend, please cancel as soon as possible on Eventbrite. We ask that you try to cancel prior to the day of the event, as this allows other women who would like to attend the ability to plan to join us.
