MOTHERLOAD is a crowdsourced documentary about a new mother’s quest to understand the increasing isolation and disconnect of the modern age, its planetary impact, and how cargo bikes could be an antidote. Filmmaker Liz Canning cycled everywhere until she had twins in 2008. Hauling babies via car was not only unsustainable but took the freedom and adventure out of life, and Liz felt trapped. She Googled “family bike” and uncovered a global movement of people replacing cars with cargo bikes: bicycles designed for carrying passengers and heavy loads. Liz set out to learn more, and MOTHERLOAD was born. The Carrboro Bicycle Coalition (CBC), BACH, and NEXT (hosts for the event) believe that in this age of climate change the lowly bicycle plays a vital part in reducing our dependency on cars, and hope that this movie will move that conversation to the forefront. If you have ever wondered if it was possible to transport kids, groceries, and other items without getting in a car, come see the movie and be inspired. Ever wanted to try out a Cargo bike? Here is your chance! We'll have cargo bikes to see and to demo before the movie (from 4 to 6). (NOTE: Cargo bikes will be in the town parking lot at the corner of Roberson and Main Street. We have already confirmed that Yuba bikes will have 4 of their cargo bike models there to demo: el Super Marchette, el Boda, Spicy Curry, Mundo Lux (Pittsburgh Steeler Special Edition). Several local cargo bike owners will be there to answer questions, too. There will also be a short cruiser ride at 4:30. (Come early for a group Show & Tell with what other people are currently using for their own cargo needs, or show off yours!) Join our email list at bikecarrboro.com to stay up to date on the event!
