Morris Dancing Workshop

This workshop is an opportunity to explore morris dancing generally, and also specifically whether Fern Ticket as a team might be a good fit for you. It’s also our opportunity to scout for dancers that we feel will be a good fit for us. As a new side, we’re looking for people who align with our vision, values and intention to be a high performing women's Cotswold morris side. Please note: This is just the dancer workshop, we will invite musicians to try out at a later date.

What to expect?

• Introduction to Fern Ticket Morris
• Warm up!
• Teaching essential stepping if you are new to Cotswold Morris dancing
• Learning at least one dance in the local Ruardean tradition, and then looking at other traditions and steps
• Cake!

What to wear? We would say standard activewear, comfortable trousers/leggings, comfy supportive trainers and removable layers as you will get warm!!

Can I bring my children? Yes, we will set up a kids corner for them to play/colour/read, but they will remain your responsibility, and on this occasion being able to hear and concentrate is really important. If you have any questions please reach out.

Parking? There should be plenty of parking for the event, but we do always encourage lift shares where possible.

Post-workshop selection process and trial period

We warmly welcome anyone to come to the workshop, regardless of age (15+), gender, body type or ability. Following the workshop, some attendees will be invited to join the side for a 4 week trial period in the Autumn before potentially being invited as full members. We will be practising on a Tuesday evening.

We’ll be looking for people who pick up the dance steps and figures, and dance with lots of energy but also good posture, control and coordination. It’s also essential that our members feel comfortable being part of a nominally women’s side, and share our passion for high quality high energy performance dance.

Why can’t I just join?

We want to be honest and up front with you, we are recruiting dancers who match our energy and passion for quality dancing and we want to be performance-ready relatively quickly.

We’re here because we love dancing and the community that comes with it, but we also have our sights set on various festivals and events, and we’ll need to be able to achieve a high standard of dance as a team to bring our vision to life.

There are many other morris sides locally that aren’t so selective, have heaps of fun dancing and are very welcoming of new members, and if you’re not the right fit for us we will happily signpost you in their direction.

We also hope that everyone who attends the workshop has an awesome time, makes friends and learns something new, whether or not they ultimately become part of Fern Ticket Morris.
