Morphometrics is the quantitative analysis of form (shape and size). It allows researchers to statistically test hypotheses about the factors that affect shape and size.It can be used to assess size and shape differences between populations, changes over evolutionary and developmental time, or between pathological and normal tissue.The biologist and mathematician D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson is regarded as the father of morphometrics. In his book “On Growth and Form” he discusses the mathematical basis for the forms of animals, including during embryonic development, and how mathematical transformations could describe shape changes.Morphometric analyses are commonly used to assess the impact of mutations on shape, assess biodiversity, understand developmental and evolutionary changes in form, reveal correlation between ecological factors and form, and to estimate genetic parameters of shape.Traditional morphometrics analyses lengths, widths, masses, areas and ratios. However, new scanning technologies have allowed landmark coordinates to be analysed in space, preserving geometric relationships among all the points. The landmark and semi-landmark approaches are widely used but new landmark free methods have been developed allowing closer modelling of curves and complex shapes.In this workshop experts from the field will give presentations on how morphometrics can be used to address a variety of questions spanning life science and medical research.
