Modern Chants

Rūta Vitkauskaitė is a composer, performer, researcher and producer. Her work spans from classical to multimedia, to experimental opera and to works hard to define into a category. Audience is always central in her works, and often being engages through non conventional ways of participation.

Modern Chants, is a new music and storytelling experience, to be attended virtually.

MODERN CHANTSmusic and poetry experienceAs Scotland descends into dark Winter, your imagination might get awoken to the nature forces, goddesses and spirits that once ruled these beautiful lands. Following the many voices of most ancient goddess Cailleach, you will venture on the journey into the Gaelic and Old Norse imagery, unfolding in poems by Dawn Wood, and speaking in ancient onomatopoeic words. You will be submerged in music sounds inspired by winds, lochs, birds, bagpiping (composed by Ruta Vitkauskaite, Gemma McGregor, and Emily Doolittle). You will hear clarinettist Joanne Nicholson and violist Katherine Wren playing for you, and will be invited to actively take part in music through digital instructions, if you wish.We welcome audiences of all ages and backgrounds. This is a child-friendly event. Please let us know if you have any accessibility requirements as we would like to do our best to accommodate you. This is an online event, presented at part of Book Week Scotland 2021.
