Mitigation Deterrence: An ICRLP Webinar

The Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy is an initiative of American University’s School of International Service. It was founded in 2018 in response to growing scientific and political attention to carbon removal technologies and practices. The Institute grew out of the Forum for Climate Engineering Assessment, a separate research initiative dedicated to assessing the social, ethical, political, and legal implications of emerging technologies that fall under the broad rubric of climate engineering.

In this webinar Nils Markusson, Duncan McLaren, and Rebecca Willis of Lancaster Environment Centre at Lancaster University UK will present results from a project called “Assessing the Mitigation Deterrence effects of Greenhouse Gas Removal technologies”. Mitigation deterrence (MD) is where the pursuit of (for example) greenhouse gas removal (GGR) delays or deters other mitigation options. The project is aimed at analyzing such effects and explores under what conditions Greenhouse Gas Removal technologies can be used with as little risk of mitigation deterrence as possible.This webinar hosted by the Institute for Carbon Removal Law &amp; Policy will explore examples of MD, give quantitative estimates of the risk of MD, and look into the causes of MD.
