People have been burying waste throughout our existence, but have you ever wondered where your waste goes after throwing it into the bin? This hour and forty-five minute (1 hr 45 min) bus tour will give you a peek behind-the-scenes to find out what really happens when you dispose of waste and clear up the myth of throwing something "away".
Join I Love A Clean San Diego to better understand how your daily actions impact the Miramar Landfill and the City of San Diego’s goal to reach zero waste by 2040. You will not only learn about the importance of zero waste, but also be given the tools on how to get there. Other tour highlights include the Allan Company Recycling Facility, the Greenery and the Household Hazardous Waste Transfer Facility.
This event is available for City of San Diego residents ONLY! As a safety precaution, long pants and close-toed shoes are REQUIRED. A signed waiver will be required at the start of the tour. This tour is not recommended for children under 12 years of age. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
READ, IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Parking and Pickup/Drop-off Location (carpooling highly encouraged):
Parking will be located just after the turn off on the road to the Metro Biosolids Center, you will find signs and flags indicating you to turn onto a maintained dirt path. Please keep an eye out for the orange and white ILACSD flags.

Please note: This tour is designed to explore the Mirarmar Landfill, this tour is conducted on a charter bus that makes frequent stops and requires partcipants to remain seated when driving. There will be one oppurtunity for guests to disembark during the tour, however it is not guaranteed.
Note: If there is rain the day of the event or severe weather the days leading up to the event, the tour will be rescheduled or canceled. If needed, registrants will receive electronic communication as soon as possible before the event.
This tour is made possible by the City of San Diego Environmental Services Department and facilitated by I Love A Clean San Diego.
Required Waivers:
PARKING INFORMATION: Once you have turned into the landfill there will be a stop sign on the left hand-side with an orange ILACSD flag, turn left at the sign. Immediately after the turn there will be a maintained dirt road on the right hand side with an ILACSD Parking sign. Turn right on the dirt road and follow along veering right until you find the ILACSD group.
IF you make it to the Metro Biosolids Center on Bio-Solids Blvd, or reached the landfill weigh station on Convoy St. you've gone to far!
Frequently asked questions
Masks are optional and will NOT be required. An announcement will be made at the start of the tour that regardless if you are wearing a mask or not, all choices shall be respected.
YES. Anyone who shows up on the day of the event without registering will not be allowed on the tour. Spaces fill up quickly and registration is required.
YES. If you, or a parent/guardian for minors, do not sign and turn in a waiver you WILL NOT be allowed on the tour!
No, due to the nature of the landfill and the proximity to the military base, no photos or videos of any kind will be permitted during the tour.
YES. This is an active landfill where there can be dangerous or hazardous materials. In the unlikely event that we must exit the bus, closed toed shoes and long pants will help protect you from any potential hazards on the ground.
It is not recommend for children 12 years old or less to attend the tour, the content is geared to a middle school age youth and older. This tour is conducted primarily from a charter bus and requires participants to stay seated for the majority of the tour while vehicle is in motion.
