Hosted by SRBCC's La Cantera, this Master Class & Jam Session with recent Grammy Winners Miguel Zenón and Luis Perdomo is another in a series of SRBCC-produced opportunities for emerging and established Chicago-based artists to learn and exchange ideas with world-class musicians.

Grammy Winner and Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón represents a select group of musicians who have masterfully balanced and blended the often contradictory poles of innovation and tradition. Widely considered as one of the most groundbreaking and influential saxophonists and composers of his generation, he has also developed a unique voice as a conceptualist, concentrating his efforts on perfecting a fine mix between Jazz and his many musical influences.

Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Zenón has built a distinguished career as a leader, releasing fifteen albums under his own name. In addition, he has honed his artistic identity by collaborating with both established jazz masters and the music’s younger innovators, irrespective of style and genre. Zenón has toured and/or recorded with artists including The SFJAZZ Collective, Charlie Haden, Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, David Sánchez, Danilo Perez, The Village Vanguard Orchestra, Kurt Elling, Guillermo Klein & Los Guachos, The Jeff Ballard Trio, Antonio Sanchez, Brian Lynch, Joey Calderazzo, Steve Coleman, Ray Barreto, Andy Montañez, Jerry Gonzalez & The Fort Apache Band, The Mingus Big Band and Bobby Hutcherson.

El Arte Del Bolero Vol. 2 – with Luis Perdomo (Miel Music 2023) – The follow up to their Grammy Nominated 2021 release, this album further explores the Latin American Songbook in a Duo format, featuring music written by composers hailing from Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Panama and México. El Arte Del Bolero Vol. 2 won a 2024 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album.

Organized by

Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center (SRBCC) is a community-based nonprofit organization serving the neighborhood of Hermosa located in Chicago’s northwest side. SRBCC is the longest-standing Puerto Rican cultural center in the city. Established in 1971, it was named in honor of Segundo Ruiz Belvis, the Puerto Rican founder of a secret abolitionist society that bought and freed slave children during Spanish colonial rule.

Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center and After School Matters partner to offer paid apprenticeships to teens (ages 14-18) to learn Traditional Puerto Rican Bomba and Music Video Production. We also offer weekly and monthly percussion classes, live music events, and community workshops.

SRBCC evolved from a community arts project developed by Association House of Chicago and community activists of the Latin American Defense Organization (LADO). These organizations supported the economic and democratic rights of the Puerto Rican and Latino community of Chicago, focusing on the areas of civic involvement, citizenship, cultural identity, public education, health, safety and security, housing, and economic opportunity.
