About this event

  • 4 days 5 hours

From realistic portraits and animated cartoons, to colorful patterns and graphic abstraction, there is a whole world of imagery you can use to tell your story! Students will explore their imaginations using opaque and translucent glass sheets, strings, granules and powders, and design 3D imagery in fused glass. Camp will cover how to cut shapes out of colorful sheet glass and make drawings with powders and enamel paints, then use the heat of a kiln (oven) to bond it all together. Students will develop their own unique styles and narratives while crafting decorative and functional forms like coasters, pendants, plates and wall tiles that play with texture, color and pattern.

What to Expect: Camp runs Monday-Friday, and class size is limited to 10 students. Students will work with glass at room temperature, and learn imagery techniques like fusing, painting, and drawing with powders. Students will break at midday for lunch, but will not leave the building. On the final day, family and friends are invited to a showing of students' experiments and finished work. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.

Eligibility: No previous experience required. Open to all rising and current middle school students.

Sliding-scale Pricing: We offer sliding-scale pricing options for youth camps in an effort to provide greater access to glass education for our growing community of young artists. Please self-select the pricing tier most appropriate for your financial situation. Families who are able to should select the higher tuition so that we can continue to offer our programs with ample staffing of expert teaching artists, and top quality glassmaking tools and materials in our state of the art studios.

Please note: Advance registration is required, as enrollment minimums must be met two weeks before the first day of camp. Once you register, you’ll receive enrollment confirmation, additional information about the camp including health and safety guidelines, and reminders via email. Organized by

UrbanGlass fosters experimentation and advances the use and critical understanding of glass as a creative medium. The organization provides access to and an education in glass for professional artists, seniors, students, and members of the public of all backgrounds and familiarity with the material. We offer year-round free and low-cost programming through our 17,000 square foot studios, robust class schedule, fellowship and scholarship opportunities, exhibition center, and in-house printed magazine.

Founded in 1977 by a group of dedicated artists, UrbanGlass sought to confront the many barriers limiting creative access to glass such as the high costs of real estate, equipment, and the scarcity of technical expertise. From the organization’s conception it served as it does today: As a creative hub and unparalleled resource center for artists, enabling this material to become available for experimentation beyond the confines of factories and universities in New York City for the first time. Today, glass is seen as an integral component of contemporary art’s complex landscape.
