Get outside with us, explore the outdoor and play with the intersection of science and art within the microscopic world around us. Learn the practice of abstraction through direct observation and interpretation and challenge conventional approaches to composition, value, and color as you delve into an abstract painting language characterized by intention, and playfulness. This is a great class if you're looking to shake up your traditional studio working habits.
4 Sundays, September 7th - 28th, 2025 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
Sept. 7th: The group meets at William O’Brien State Park for a 3-hour hike to observe and sustainably harvest bits of lichen specimens for later viewing. We will enjoy a picnic lunch after the hike.
Sept. 14th: View specimens under the microscope and sketch design elements for the final composition, begin painting
Sept. 21th: In studio workday
Sept. 28th: Final in studio workday and peer review
Registration fee: $185, includes guide fees and some materials
Adults 18+, all skill levels welcome
Note: must be able to hike hilly terrain slowly or moderately for up to three hours.
What to wear: Sensible hiking shoes and clothing for the hike and clothing appropriate for messy art-making activities while in the studio
What to bring: Backpack or collection bag, reusable water bottle, and bag lunch for the hike then a reusable water bottle and snacks for in-studio time
