MICHR Mentoring Academy: Fostering Independence

The MICHR Mentoring Academy curriculum is based on the widely used Mentor Training for Clinical and Translational Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER).

This session is designed to develop and hone mentoring skills for mentors in clinical and translational research. Participants will learn how to better coach and counsel other less-experienced mentors, as well as enhance their own interpersonal skills for mutually beneficial mentor-mentee interactions. Participants will also address challenges facing faculty mentors via case studies, group discussions, and role-plays.

Sessions are limited to 25 participants.

Fostering Independence

Learning Objectives for Fostering Independence: Mentors will have the knowledge and skills to:

  • Define independence, its core elements, and how those elements change over the course of a mentoring relationship
  • Employ various strategies to build their mentee’s confidence, establish trust, and foster independence
  • Identify the benefits and challenges of fostering independence, including the sometimes conflicting goals of fostering independence and achieving grant-funded research objectives
