ABOUT MICAYLA...
Micayla started playing the piccolo when she was 8 and the flute when she was 14...which is exactly the opposite of what most flute/piccolo students do. Shortly after turning 14, she started busking on Charlottesville's downtown pedestrian mall to earn the money she needed to purchase her first flute. Due to many generous passers-by who enjoyed listening to and watching a shy, 14-year-old play her piccolo, Micayla was able to purchase, with no help from her parents, a gently used, semi-professional, solid silver Yamaha 56`1 (for those who are curious about such things). The experience of busking (playing in public for tips) confirmed her desire to pursue a career as a professional, classical musician.

For the first 10 years, Micayla studied with Cari Shipp in Charlottesville, Virginia. During this time, Cari provided many opportunities for Micayla to perform in recitals and ensembles. In addition, from 2019 to 2022, she performed with the Youth Orchestras of Central Virginia (YOCVA), first with the Evans Orchestra, then a flute ensemble, and eventually, the Youth Symphony. In school, she auditioned for and won positions in the District Band (schools from around Central Virginia) for 5 consecutive years, and in her junior year of high school (2022) auditioned for and was one of three piccoloists selected for Virginia All-State.

For her senior year of high school, Micayla left home and attended the world-renowned Interlochen Arts Academy, an arts-focused boarding school in Interlochen, Michigan, where she studied with classical and jazz flutist, Nancy Stagnitta. In addition to living and breathing music during her waking hours, and being around other like-minded students and teachers focusing on their art, she applied to and received offers from top conservatories in Boston, Dublin, London, and Vienna.

Just days after graduating, Micayla (and her Dad) visited the two conservatories not previously eliminated: The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow and Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium...aka The Royal Danish Academy of Music (RDAM), in Copenhagen, Denmark. Within minutes of meeting RDAM's flute teacher, Micayla decided she wanted to attend RDAM and study with the very effervescent and very accomplished Danish flutist, Ulla Miilmann.

FOR THOSE COMING FROM OUT OF TOWN...
If you are not from Charlottesville, there are plenty of wineries, breweries, and historical sites close to the city. There are also many good restaurants not far from the venue and plenty of Airbnbs and hotels. If the weather is nice, it is delightful to eat 'al fresco' on Charlottesville's downtown pedestrian mall.
