Peace is Loud and Mezcla Media Collective present Collective Lens Impact Day, a full day in-person immersive dedicated to film impact work.

Collective Lens Impact Day will include:

  • Peace is Loud’s Impact Roadmap: the what, why, and how of impact, including an overview of how to build a strategy for an impact campaign
  • A case study presentation of the impact campaign for Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project
  • The opportunity for filmmakers to workshop their own impact campaign plans with fellow creators

The in-person session will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 9:30am-4:30pm at OTV Studio (2557 W North Ave, Chicago, IL). Light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The event will be open to Mezcla Media members, who will also receive access to Peace is Loud’s Collective Lens Digital Library, a collection of templates, tools, guides, and resources to accompany filmmakers on their impact plans.

Who is this event most tailored to?

  • This session is especially geared towards emerging or mid-career filmmakers who are seeking to learn more about impact campaigns and hoping to integrate impact work in the near future. Filmmakers with projects in production or post-production will be prioritized.
  • We encourage Director + Producer teams to attend together, though it is not required!

How can I participate in the workshop?

  • When you register, you will be asked about your current project. Please let us know if you would like to share your film with other filmmakers to be workshopped at the event, or if you prefer to support other filmmakers’ films.

What can I expect from the space?

  • OTV Studios is a wheelchair accessible venue.
  • We will have a notetaker at the event, and notes will be shared with all attendees.
  • We have transportation and childcare stipends available for filmmakers on a case by case basis - please reach out to us directly so that we can support your participation.
  • No dress code!

Florencia Varela bio:

Florencia Varela, Program Lead for Learning and Filmmaker Outreach at Peace is Loud

Florencia's work lies at the intersection of learning, social impact, and film. She currently leads Peace is Loud's learning and filmmaker outreach initiatives, mainly through the organization's signature program Collective Lens. She previously has worked on impact campaigns for films such as To the End, On the Divide, Knock Down the House, Women War & Peace II, The Bleeding Edge, and The Hunting Ground. In her current role, Florencia seeks to center filmmakers who are currently underrepresented and/or underrecognized in the industry, and offer spaces to share knowledge, redistribute power, and build community. Previous to Peace is Loud, Florencia honed her partnerships, outreach, and development skills over more than a decade at organizations such as PEN America, the Rubin Museum of Art, the Poetry Society of America, and Nitehawk Cinema, where she launched the cinema’s partnerships and sponsorships program. Florencia is also on the board of The Future of Film is Female, is a published poet, and was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Regina Emiliano bio:

Regina Emiliano is a freelance filmmaker passionate about lifting up BIPOC and womxn stories. She graduated from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign with a degree in Communication. She has served as a Grant Writer for several upcoming documentaries such as Traces of Home, Searching for Onoda, Love is a Stranger, BAPSI and more. She is the creative director and producer of upcoming podcast Let’s Chat Creative. She has also worked on the Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project as their Impact Coordinator and as Full Spectrum Features’ Community Development Specialist. Other productions she is credited with include Santa Camp as their PA streaming on HBO Max, The Year Between as their Prop Assistant streaming on Apple TV & Amazon, and DP for a puppet satire, Beverly Hill. Regina’s aspirations are to continue to create meaningful art that fosters community and connection.
