About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Join us for an immersive afternoon exploring mezcal through two expressive mediums: taste and craft. Hosted at Ahmee Ceramics at The Velvet Mill, this hands-on event is a celebration of tradition, artistry, and connection—led by mezcal expert Ben Fuller of Skurnik Wines and ceramicists Ahmee and Magaly of Ahmee Ceramics.

🌵 A Guided Mezcal Tasting Featuring Small-Batch Producers from Oaxaca
Ben Fuller, Spirits Specialist with Skurnik Wines, will lead a focused tasting highlighting artisanal mezcals from small, independent producers across Oaxaca. These are not industrialized spirits—they’re handcrafted, deeply expressive mezcals made in limited quantities by mezcaleros who preserve centuries-old techniques: slow roasting in earthen pits, crushing with tahonas, fermenting in open-air vats, and distilling in small copper or clay stills.

Each pour tells the story of its maker, its village, and the wild agave from which it was born. You’ll taste the diversity of agave varietals and terroirs, from the mineral-rich valleys to the sun-soaked hillsides of rural Oaxaca—connecting spirit to soil, and tradition to taste.

🥃 Copitas: The Ceramic Heart of Mezcal Ritual
During the tasting, you’ll be guided by Ahmee and Magaly from Ahmee Ceramics in shaping and glazing two clay copitas—the small, open vessels traditionally used for drinking mezcal. More than just drinking tools, copitas are part of mezcal’s ritualistic heritage: wide and shallow to allow the spirit’s aromas to rise and be shared, passed from hand to hand in celebration and community.

Historically, copitas were made from fired clay, gourd shells, or even hollowed fruits—each rooted in the land, just like the spirit they cradle. In this workshop, you’ll design your own copitas with intention, inspired by the traditions that give mezcal its soul. Finished pieces will be fired and available for pickup at Spencer & Lynn in the following weeks.

About Ahmee Ceramics

Ahmee Ceramics is the creative collaboration of Amee Hussey and Magaly Del Castillo, rooted in their diverse cultural backgrounds—Amee from South Korea, Magaly from Peru—and shaped by their shared studio in Stonington, CT.
