T his class is a survey of metal sculpture. We will be covering form and aesthetics as well as a more indepth look at Metal shop basics spread out amongst the 3 sessions we meet.

Some of what you’ll learn:

  • MIG Welder
  • Hand-held plasma cutter
  • Chop Saws
  • Band Saw
  • Angle Grinders
  • Proper Shop Safety
  • Sculpture history
  • How to design and develop a sculptural idea
  • and more!

Typical structure of the class is generally:

  • Safety overview
  • Setting up the shop
  • Sculpture history, techniques and other classroom lectures
  • Demonstration from instructor
  • Hands-on with metal tools
  • Hands-on with welding tools
  • Developing your project
  • Cleaning up the shop

Experience Level: All are welcome! Although this class will be geared towards a beginner level. Please notify the teacher if you have previous welding/metalworking experience and how you would like to benefit from the class.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • If you have it, bring your own welding PPE: welding gloves, welding mask, safety glasses, and ear muffs. We do have enough for everyone to borrow, but we understand if you prefer your own.
  • Water (closed-top bottle)
  • Snacks & Lunch (although there are close by spots to grab food)
  • Outdoor-appropriate clothing (our class is held outdoors, rain or shine)
  • Clothing should be natural fibers: long sleeves, jeans and closed-toe shoes-- cottons denims, natural leather, preferably. (Synthetic fabrics like blends/polyester/rayon/nylon are plastics and will melt.)
  • Material needed for your sculpture. If your project has special needs and/or goes beyond what can be provided at Chimera, the student is expected to retrieve those materials. Talk with the instructor before or on the first day of class about the scope of your project.

  • This class has a minimum attendance of 2 and a maximum attendance of 4, all attendees must register 72 hours in advance.
  • All refunds must be requested at least 72 hours prior to class start.
  • Due to Covid-19 and/or weather restrictions, classes are subject to rescheduling/ cancellations. Refunds would be issued at that time if necessary
