About this event

  • 5 hours 30 minutes

Mental Health First Aid for Youth is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people.

The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

**There is NO CHARGE for this course, but participants must complete a 2-hour, self-paced online class prior to attending the 6-hour, in-person training. Your instructor will reach out to you prior to the class starting to provide you with information to complete the 2-hour, self-paced portion.**

Participants will have access to their certificate of completion once they have completed a post-test and evaluation.

Lunch will be provided for reigistered participants.

**This course is funded by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services. You must be a resident of Virginia to register for this course.**
