About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

On Thursday, May 30, we welcome Maureen Beitler to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Beitler will present her ongoing photography project, To The Bone, which documents the daily life of a family on their small farm in the Hudson Valley. The project follows Emily, a single mother of nine, who manages her small farm with the help of her young daughters.

Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.

Maureen Beitler’s photographs are deeply rooted in the documentary tradition, but also draws from her own personal history. She shoots long-term projects, which can last years, exploring themes of women’s empowerment and resilience and photographing families and communities often living outside of expected norms. Known for her intimate environmental portraits and landscapes, her work regularly combines these elements with storytelling. Her work as a former intensive care nurse has also informed her approach to photography. “As a nurse it was critical to look beyond what was initially presented and observed and to not shy away from pain and adversity. That translates to my photography practice and my everyday life. I look for what is true and beautiful about the human spirit and that process of discovery takes time."
