MDT Quick-Build Program Workshop

The City of Key West is teaming up with urban planning firmStreet Plansto build a grant-funded pilot project along the Crosstown Greenway (Staples Ave./Von Phister St. between 12th St. and Reynolds St.)-- identified in the March 2019 Bicycle/Pedestrian Master Plan as the Crosstown Connector-- to test elements that will help make the corridor safer and more comfortable for bicyclists and pedestrians, improve signage and branding along the corridor, and increase greenery. This methodology is known as Tactical Urbanism, an approach to neighborhood building that uses low-cost, temporary materials to test infrastructure in advance of a long-term permanent project.The pilot project will test design strategies unique to a Neighborhood Greenway (also called a Bike Boulevard), which the National Association of City Transportation Officials defines as: streets with low motorized traffic volumes and speeds, designated and designed to give bicycle travel priority.So far, the project team has hosted a kickoff public workshop, disseminated an online survey to help understand the context of the corridor, visited with neighbors along the corridor to hear their thoughts, and hosted two evenings of public "open houses" to update the public on the feedback and project ideas received so far. These public engagements have been to identify where along the corridor there are challenges that could benefit from Neighborhood Greenway interventions.

Crosstown Greenway Pilot Project

<P>The Miami-Dade Transportation Quick-Build Program is a County effort that provides funding and technical assistance to anyone who wants to make short-term, low-cost transportation improvements to their neighborhood. To launch this program, Miami-Dade County and partner Green Mobility Network are holding a contest, called the Quick-Build Challenge, for the first $60,000 in funding! Join us for a kick-off workshop to hear more about the program and how you can get involved!  </P>
<P>At the workshop, Green Mobility Network and urban planning/design firm Street Plans will teach you about Tactical Urbanism, a city, organizational, and/or citizen-led approach to neighborhood building using short-term, low-cost, and scalable interventions to catalyze long-term change. You’ll brainstorm ideas for how to improve your communities, gain hands-on experience in the design and implementation of these ideas, and be inspired to apply for the Quick-Build Challenge! </P>
