Maya Calendar Workshop

The Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation is a Cleveland, Ohio non-profit art center dedicated to the production and preservation of hand papermaking and the art of the book.The Morgan Conservatory was conceived in 2005 by Tom Balbo and entrepreneur Charles Morgan. In 2007, the Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) and a former auto parts machine plant on the edge of Cleveland’s Midtown and Hough neighborhoods was leased. The 15,000 square foot plant was transformed into an art facility with studios; an 85' double-wall gallery; and space for community events. In the back on the property, a unique Kozo garden was planted to grow fiber to be processed into handmade papers.Today, approximately 50 workshops are scheduled yearly and utilized by over 200 developing and practicing artists. Year-round intern programs attract participants nation-wide, an Artist-in-Residence program now provides 14 artist with access to studio equipment and housing stipends, and the Morgan provides educational programs for K-12 students, seniors, and neighborhoods. Programming for the gallery continues to expand including an annual juried show, artist showcases, and promotional exhibitions.The Sam Caraboolad garden in the rear of the Morgan’s studio space allows the entire papermaking process to be experienced and is the largest Kozo garden in the country. Kozo, a type of Mulberry Tree from Japan, is the base of Eastern Kozo paper, but the garden also houses milkweed, hosta, and other native plants that are either processed into paper or embedded into handmade paper.

<DIV CLASS="m_3227663865771466204gmail-"><SPAN>In this half-day workshop, you will learn about the 260-day Mayan Ceremonial Calendar with Maya scholar and activist Ajpub’ García, currently in residence at the Morgan as an apprentice. </SPAN>You can calculate your own birth date in the calendar and learn about the role of this calendar in both historic and contemporary Maya communities. Then, using Morgan handmade paper, make your own small book in the traditional Mayan screen-fold format and decorate it with the appropriate calendar signs and information using simple printing techniques.</DIV>

The Morgan’s Maya Apprentice Project seeks to assist in the reintroduction of a hands-on skill that has a long tradition in Maya history.</SPAN></DIV>
<DIV CLASS="m_3227663865771466204gmail-_1mf m_3227663865771466204gmail-_1mj"><SPAN>From August to November, Maya scholar, Ajpub’ Pablo García Ixmatá is visiting from Guatemala to learn techniques in papermaking and bookbinding. By utilizing natural and recycled fibers from both Western and Eastern papermaking traditions, García intends to make a variety of traditional and modern book structures and will share these techniques with native Maya communities through workshops.</SPAN></DIV>
