In the spirit of Halloween, College of Charleston Professor of English Scott Peeples' The Man of the Crowd explores the great mystery writer Edgar Allan Poe's rootless life in the cities of the Eastern seaboard, including a year spent on Charleston's Sullivan Island. Jon Varese's book The Spirit Photographer is a haunting gothic novel in the tradition of Poe's work. They discuss Poe's enduring appeal across a wide spectrum from academia to fiction, poetry, film, classical and popular music.
