MASTER-CLASS: NEROLI + ROSE

The Institute for Art and Olfaction is devoted to creative experimentation with a focus on scent. Our goal is to create new points of entry for people interested in the field of olfaction, while accommodating creative ideas in all mediums. The IAO is a 501(c)3 non-profit located in Los Angeles, USA.

The IAO is pleased to welcome back perfumer Eva-Marie Lind, who joins us in Spring 2018 to teach two master classes over two magical days. In these separate but related sessions, Eva-Marie will lead students through a deep study of the aromatic particulars of rose and neroli, drawing from her 30 years of experience in the perfume industry.

FLOWERS OF PERFUME: NEROLI + ROSE
Each of these flowers offer the fragrance and flavora industry a rare availability for a variety of extractions. Creating a unique symphonic olfactive range, they can be used for diversified applications: Perfumery, culinary and cuisine arts (growing), cosmeceutical and personal care, and complimentary therapy, spa, for health and well-being.
Drawn from her 30 years in the perfume industry, and with a focused passion for raw materials of natural origin, Eva-Marie will present an immersive two-part masterclass, highlighting these two primary flowers of classical perfumery.
Each master class will be broken into two parts:
First half: Introducing plant and fragrance history; botany, chemistry, sourcing by species / terroir, extraction methods, impacts on composing and formulation (especially challenged with naturals) their (these flowers) integral role in iconic perfumes.  We will highlight and engage the invaluable tool of Organoleptic charting (engagement as groups) while discussing olfactory distinctions and variables in Aroma classification and building deeper sensory awareness.
Second half: Advancing our sensory awareness, expression and application tools utilizing examples as synesthesia and Morphology – philosophies and artistic expressions successfully incorporated in practice and design by Éva-Marie.  We will explore creative perfumery approaches as building accords, single note expressions and the utilization of secondary extractions of floral water and organic alcohol(s) that can highlight and enhance composing with these two single flowers. We will conclude highlighting the aesthetical beauty attributes and therapeutic relevance in these materials as a valuable tool for Perfume as Wellness™.
We will also touch upon the leaf extractions of each flower, Petitgrain of neroli (bitter orange) and Rose leaf, of rose.

SATURDAY MARCH 31: NEROLI
A botanic native to the Himalayan foothills and cultivated in Asia over 2,000 years ago, the blossoming bitter orange was brought to the shores of the Mediterranean, where it proved itself to be in perfect collaboration of climate and soil – terroir, for the trees to flourish. As it found it’s way to be distilled in the 16th century and became a prized raw material component for perfumery in the 17th century, stories are shared connected to Anne Marie, Duchess of Bracciano, Princess and wife to Flavio Orsini, Prince of Nerola, Lazio, Italy, who would draw particular attention to the aromatic plant, falling to adoration with the distinctive scent that spoke a language both feminine (sweet and floral) and masculine (fresh and spicy).
This is a unique opportunity to experience and explore the highly sought after perfume material from the flowers of Citrus aurantium var amara, commonly known as Neroli. Along with a materials sampling palette, Éva-Marie will highlight the 3 distinctive harvests and distillations of La Vecchia Distilleria (’15, ’16, ’17).  Utilizing these harvests as primary example, with one of her personalized creations, she will share some of her creative empirical insights in mastering obstacles that can challenge perfumers working from a primary palette of naturals.

SUNDAY APRIL 1: ROSE
It is the fragrant waters of Rose which came first until the ending of the 15th century when Saladin of Asculia, the doctor of Prince of Taranto, described in his Compenditium Aromatorium the double distillation which would extract both water and essence, further explored by painters Hieronymus, Rubens, and Porta at the ending of the 16th century.
It is also this century when the Rosa centifolia (Rose de Mai), was introduced to France, thought to be a hybrid between the hundred-leafed rose (one with many thorns) and the one with few, the Apothecary Rose. In many of the valleys where she is cultivated and harvested, she has been growing for over 300 years. Her general harvest season is from end of May to mid-June, being picked before what Paracelsus called ‘Balsamiticum Tempus,’ the hour before sunset when the dew has accumulated that protects her fragrance from evaporating, and completing before mid-day.
La Vecchia Distilleria specializes to the rare antique Italian old-roses. Along with a materials sampling palette (terroir and species), Éva-Marie will highlight and share the unique and celebrated floral water of La Vecchia Distilleria, and offer insight on how aromatic waters, secondary distilled aromatic plant systems, can be incorporated creatively for culinary, wellness, perfume and cosmetic, formulation and design.

ABOUT EVA-MARIE LIND
Sensory Perfume Designer and Olfactive Artist Éva-Marie, currently makes her home in Vallebona, Lugria Italy, where she stewards the heritage, 1856 plantation and distillery, La Vecchia Distilleria, dedicated to orange blossom, Neroli, and antique roses, and fulfills the role of Director of R &amp; D and Perfumer in House. Her fragrances and concept formulations have been Industry-celebrated inside an expansive and diverse collection of products, highly visible in marketplace corridors, with celebrated accolades; design and performance awards. For 30 years she has worked inside every aspect of production of botanically-driven fragrance ingredients, specialized to natural and single origin materials, plant cultivation, harvest to extraction – to design, immersing her in travel to global gardens now equaling her background.
Completing her most rigorous formal education in France at the College d’Aromatherapie pour Professions Medicals, PhytoSun Laps and Purdue University, Rutgers New Crop Lab, led her to develop private practice as a Internationally recognized Aromatologist, Aromatherapist, Aromachologist. Inspired through her extensive consultation and trend-setting design work with clients as Aveda and Seventh Generation, she was inspired to found her independent Studio, EM Arome (2006) – USA + EU (2017), fusing her multi-layered background and developing a uniquely diversified, one of a kind portfolio.
She has dedicated herself to environmental, ecological, cultural, and social concerns for wellness, with artistic integrations in a variety of expressional philosophies, as her own specialized inter-relationship with Synesthesia. She has held peer-reviewed and board positions in organizations such as Demeter USA, IFEAT, Skin Inc. and AHPA, and has worked within all facets of sensory research and development. She has also been a primary and visiting educator, Dean and program lead, with a breadth that expands from middle school to University, specialized to learning styles of Waldorf and Montessori disciplines, spearheading accredited curriculum, and is a published Author.
