Masa! You know it as the dough that’s formed from stone-ground nixtamalized corn and transformed into tortillas, tamales, tlayudas, and the list goes on. But it’s more than just a bedrock of Mexican cooking — masa has permeated Los Angeles food culture through and through, making appearances in pizza doughs, corndog batters, pie crusts and beyond. To celebrate the debut of Jorge Gaviria’s new book MASA: Techniques, Recipes, and Reflections on a Timeless Staple, Masienda is hosting MASAFEST, an outdoor food fair featuring some of the city’s best expressions of masa from favorites like Taco María, Ditroit, Quarantine Pizza, Los Dorados &amp; Poncho’s Tlayudas. There will also be a book signing hosted by Now Serving, a kid's activity corner, and a pop-up shop from Masienda and music courtesy of DJ José Galván. Parking, Ride Shares &amp; Metro If possible, we encourage you to arrive via rideshare services like Lyft and Uber or via metro since parking spaces in LA are a precious commodity. The event site is equidistant from the Expo/Bundy and Expo/Sepulveda stops on the Expo Metro Line, each about a five-minute walk. (There’s also parking available at both stations.) If you plan to drive, there’s street parking in the neighborhood, with lots of availability on both Pico Blvd and Exposition Blvd. Hot tip: The Spot Angels app is a great resource. Menu OptionsThe food and beverage vendors popping up at MASAFEST will have a range of offerings, priced from $3 to $25. Credit cards will be accepted at all food and merchandise tents. Food and drinks are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and all food is available a la carte. Last call for orders will be 2:30pm. Vegetarians and vegans welcome, and there will be plenty of gluten-free options. Weather Report This outdoor event will take place rain or shine. Please note that while we can’t anticipate the weather, things are looking good for our event window of 11am to 3pm! Our vendors will have tents and there will be some umbrellas for shade. Covid Precautions We understand that Covid-19 is an ongoing concern. As the event is outdoors and in the open air, masking is optional and we encourage you to stay home if you have any symptoms. Book Signing Advance copies of the book MASA will be available for sale in the Now Serving merch tent for $35. If you’d like a special note inscribed, Jorge will be at the tent at 12, 1 and 2pm. Complimentary Masa for Early Pre-Registration If you were among the first 300 hundred people to RSVP before September 6, your Heirloom Corn Masa Harina will be available at the merch tent. Reminder: You are eligible for one free bag of masa per email address used to pre-register.
