About this event

It's true that moths have a less-than-stellar reputation, but guess what? Moths are essential to a healthy, functioning ecosystem and definitely don't deserve their negative reputations. Many, many animals depend on them for food, including 95% of our songbirds like bluebirds and chickadees. One family of chickadees requires more than 5000 insects--including caterpillars of moths and butterflies-- for one brood. Imagine how many ALL of the songbirds that live in your yard might need to get through one summer!

Join us for an evening outside, in the woods, with a Naturalist and Teacher who's been sharing nature with people of all ages for more than 30 years. Sharon is passionate about all things nature, and she will open your eyes to a whole new world. You'll be shocked at some of the beautiful moths that share our forest with us.

After seeing some photos and having a discussion about moths, we'll head out into the woods, with flashlights, to see what the "mothing stations" have attracted. These are white sheets with bright lights directed onto them and bringing in a wide variety of insects, including moths.

It's sure to be a unique evening!

Isnt' this the cutest moth you've ever seen! Like a Muppet's character!

Some moths have a secret inside of their wings.

Frequently asked questions

Is this appropriate for kids?

School-age kids and older are fine to attend. However, keep in mind they'll be staying up late! So maybe scheduling a program on a weekend or after school is out might work best.

Do I need to bring a flashlight?

No, flashlights will be provided to you for the evening.

I hate moths! Why would I want to come see them?

Do you like birds like bluebirds, cardinals, chickadees or goldfinches? If you said yes, then you like moths more than you thought because 95% of our songbirds feed their babies insects, and especially, moth and butterfly caterpillars. Our world NEEDS moths! So why not come learn about them!

What will we see?

I have no idea! I set up the mothing stations and then wait and see who will show up. I never know!! But almost always there are interesting moths and other insects worth looking at and talking about.

Will I see a luna moth?

Maybe, but I never know who will show up on any given night. That's one of the reasons it's so fun-- like Christmas-- you never know what you'll get, but you know you'll enjoy it!
