Marking Memory: Exploring, Honoring & Documenting Place

Marking Memory: Exploring, Honoring & Documenting Place

Overview

Dive into the stories and memories tied to Marietta’s historic earthworks.

How do we remember the places that shape our communities? Join Rural Action and The Castle for a two-part program exploring the ways people have documented, honored, and preserved meaningful places throughout history.

We’ll begin with a guided tour led by Wesley Clarke, exploring Marietta’s historic earthworks and learning about the significance of the mounds and the people who created them.

In the second half of the program we will explore different ways people have documented and commemorated important places over time. Participants will then have the opportunity to create their own record of a meaningful place through a hands-on activity, with several creative mediums to choose from.

This free program is an opportunity to explore local history while considering how we preserve memories of place and how we might continue that tradition ourselves.

This program is part of Ohio Country 1776: Gateway to America, a series of free, hands-on programs exploring the people, places, skills, and landscapes that shaped Appalachian Ohio and the early United States.

This program is made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
