About this event

Please note that this event was previously advertised for the 13th June, but has been postponed to the 20th. Tickets will be available for preregistration from the 13th June.

Our final event of the term will be a recital on Sunday of 9th week (20th June) by the clarinettist and composer Mark Simpson, whose star has been firmly in the ascendant ever since winning both the BBC Young Musician and BBC Proms/Guardian Young Composer of the Year competitions in 2006. Mark has become one of the most exciting instrumentalists and composers of his generation, performing worldwide as a concerto soloist with orchestras including the Mozarteum Salzburg and the BBC Philharmonic, and at venues such as the Barbican, Wigmore Hall, and the Royal Festival Hall. He’s had works commissioned by the Salzburg and Edinburgh International Festivals, and his first opera, Pleasure, was co-commissioned by Opera North, the Royal Opera and Aldeburgh Music in 2016. On the 13th June, his new Violin Concerto received its live world premiere with the LSO and Nicola Benedetti at the Barbican.

Mark will be playing music of his own composition, alongside Debussy, Weber, and contemporary composers Edmund Finnis and Gavin Higgins.

Due to ongoing restrictions, free pre-registration is required, and all audience members will need to wear masks unless exempted. We will be following social distancing guidelines, according to which groups of 6 (not necessarily from the same household) are permitted to sit together. For that reason, please book in groups of 6 if at all possible. Bookings for smaller parties will be amalgamated into groups of 6, in order to maximise capacity - if this is something you are particularly uncomfortable with, please email the General Secretary of the Musical Society at for alternative arrangements.

For ticket enquiries, please also email the General Secretary.
