Scandinavia House was created by the American-Scandinavian Foundation to be the leading center for Nordic culture in the United States. It offers a wide range of programs that include exhibitions, film series, concerts and other performances, readings, lectures, language courses, and activities for kids.

Estonian folk singer Mari Kalkun presents a performance of unique compositions inspired by nature, Estonian poetry and folk music. She will perform an array of songs with lyrics written by Estonian poets intertwined with traditional singing (regilaul) and folklore, using the kannel, piano, accordion, guitar, and other instruments.

About the Artist
Mari Kalkun is a musician, singer and a composer with Southern Estonian roots. Her unique compositions are inspired by nature, Estonian poetry and folk music, with lyrics written by local poets carrying the feeling of rural life, the forests, and the landscape. The flowing sound of Estonian language and its dialects create a meditative atmosphere in her music intertwined with the traditional singing – regilaul - and folkore. She plays with the kannel, piano, accordion, and guitar, and also pipes, whistles and uses various experimental instruments.
Her first solo album, Üü tulõk (Arrival of the Night, Õunaviks, 2007) gained remarkable recognition among Estonian music audience and critics. She has since performed in France, Hungary, England, Scotland, Germany, Finland, Russia, Armenia and Japan. Vihmakõnõ (Dear Rain, Õunaviks, 2010), her second album, is dedicated to her grandparents. Being personal and keeping connection with the roots, Dear Rain continues what was started with the first album but moves closer towards minimalism and experimenting with sound/sounds.
Mari also performs with Mari Kalkun & Runorun, a Helsinki-based international group started in 2012. Their first album Tii ilo (Rockadillo Records) was released in 2015, followed by a Japanese and German release shortly after. Tii ilo celebrates the beauty of moving and being on the road, deriving power from Estonian song tradition, contemporary poetry and music from Finno-Ugric areas. They have performed at various festivals and venues in Estonia, Finland, and Hungary, and accompanied Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves at his state visit to Lithuania in 2014.
Mari Kalkun received a master degree in traditional singing from Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. There she studied in part in exchange at Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland and performed her master concert both in Tallinn and Helsinki. She received Estonian Ethno Music Award 2013 as the Best Singer.
