Ruby’s story—immortalized in Norman Rockwell’s famous 1964 painting The Problem We All Live With—remains a powerful reminder of what’s possible when bravery meets conviction.This Mardi Gras-themed evening brings Ruby to Elizabeth City for a celebration of community, culture, and purpose, all in support of Camp Bridges, a transformational summer camp in northeastern North Carolina.A festive night of music, conversation, food, and connection—with a silent auction taking place throughout the evening.Presented in partnership with Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc. and Arts of the Albemarle.<h2>About Ruby Bridges</h2>Ruby Bridges is a civil rights icon whose walk to school at age six helped dismantle segregation in American public education. As the first Black child to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South, her courage became a defining moment of the Civil Rights Movement. Today, Ruby continues her lifelong work by speaking to students, educators, and communities across the country about empathy, courage, and the responsibility we share to create a more just future.<h2>About Camp Bridges</h2>Camp Bridges is a 100% scholarship-based, weeklong summer camp for children ages 8–12 in northeastern North Carolina. Rooted in outdoor exploration, creativity, and guided conversations about empathy and courage, the camp reflects Ruby’s belief in the power of childhood experiences to shape strong, compassionate leaders.Proceeds from this event directly support scholarships and programming so that every child who attends Camp Bridges can do so at no cost to their family.<h2>Event Experience</h2><h3>VIP Admission | 6:00 – 7:00 PM</h3>VIP guests will enjoy early entry and a more personal moment with Ruby, including:<ul><li>An intimate opportunity to meet Ruby Bridges</li><li>A commemorative photo with Ruby</li><li>A signed copy of one of Ruby’s books</li><li>Continued access to the full evening program</li><li>Mardi Gras-themed specialty cocktails, beer, and wine included.
