Map & Compass Basics

Friends of Government Canyon is made up of a growing group of active volunteers who take pride in the work we do — from grooming trails to facilitating education programs to advocating the protection of the Aquifer and numerous resources found within the boundaries of the Natural Area. We are hikers, naturalists, artists, mountain bikers, runners, researchers, clean water advocates and in general, lovers of the outdoors with one common mission; protecting and preserving the Natural Area.

Friends of Government Canyon

Learn to use a map and compass!  Join Friends of Government Canyon volunteers for a fun workshop to help you learn how to find your way around Government Canyon and other Natural Areas and Parks. After the workshop, if conditions permit it, you can try out your new skills on one of the many trails at GCSNA!
Who is Invited:
Open to ages 12 and older; participants under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian.
Registration &amp; Fees
Registration required for EACH participant.  All Natural Area entry <A HREF="http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/government-canyon/fees-facilities/entrance-fees" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">fees</A> apply to this workshop.
When &amp; Where to Meet
Arrive by 1:15 pm. Meet in the Exhibit Gallery next to the Visitor’s Center.  Plan ahead, as the Natural Area often experiences heavy visitation and wait time at the fee booth. 
What to Wear &amp; Bring
Dress for the weather. Bring your own compass or borrow one of ours.  Conditions permitting, after the workshop, try out your new found skills on one of the many trails at GCSNA!
Requirements
Group size is limited to 16. No pets please. Minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian. To reduce human impact on the Natural Area, please follow the Leave No Trace principles of outdoor ethics.
