Mamalluca, September 9th Program

This year, Mamalluca, Chilean Cinema Series USA, 8th edition, expands its scope by celebrating the Golden Age of Chilean Cinema—which serves both, as a mirror to the national identity and a living visual archive of the country’s collective memory and culture.

With this year’s edition, Mamalluca offers the opportunity to witness and learn customs, social transformations and life in a different era. This year’s productions form part of the cornerstone of a cinema that was fundamental to the development of modern-day Chilean filmmakers and the industry.

Over the course of two days, we will also honor Nieves Yankovic—a Chilean actress, director and documentalist, by featuring the following: Romance de Medio Siglo (full-feature film), in the role of an actress; and two of her prestigious documentaries Isla de Pascua and Andacollo.

Day 1 Program

Romance de medio siglo (Luis Moglia Barth, 1944)

A melodrama depicting a love story amidst major historical events in Chile: the 1891 revolution, the 1906 Valparaíso earthquake, and the centennial celebrations of 1910. This film marked the beginning of what would become known as the Golden Age of Chilean cinema.

Nieves Yankovic, under the name of Nieves Yanko interprets one of the main characters. This was the first film produced by Chilefilms Studios.

Romance de medio siglo is a film from the Cineteca Nacional de Chile.

Amucha (Jesús Sánchez Fuentes, 2019)

A contemporary production that relates a story of Chile’s Mapuche culture.

Based on a Mapuche epew (fable), Amucha explores the relationship between a grandfather, Ligkoyam, and his granddaughter, Alen.

The story takes place in the region of the Lafkenche people, located on the southern coast of Chile, around the year 1300 AD. It draws upon the traditional mythology of the Mapuche people. The close and friendly bond between Ligkoyam and Alen develops until one day an omen announces a new path for Ligkoyam. The film was recorded in Mocha Island, Chile.

Amucha is a film from the Cineteca Nacional de Chile.
