This 2-hour workshop will offer inspiration, tools, and practice in creating rhythms to support voice and lyric-based music.

<h2>The call to bring drumming together with singing is as ancient as our human ancestry. </h2>So as the modern community singing movement has been on the rise, more and more people have become interested in drumming to support songs, but many either don’t know how to begin coming up with rhythms or get stuck in rhythmic ruts. As a percussionist, arranger, and songleader, I am inspired to empower you with the confidence and tools to create rhythms that are functional, interesting, and best serve the music you are supporting, whether or not you’ve been “musically-trained.” And I aim to make the process a whole lot of fun...In this workshop, we will deepen our understanding of the function of drums, cover important concepts for laying out a roadmap for your rhythm, and explore both organic and prescriptive approaches. I will teach a broad range of rhythms to add to your groove repertoire and help you make informed cultural and stylistic choices. We will also explore the concept of arrangement, which is the creation of rhythmic parts that develop over time in conjunction with the journey of a song.And then we’ll play! In this hands-on experience, you’ll have the chance to come up with rhythms for songs I share and will also be invited to share songs with me that I will use to demonstrate my process of coming up with parts.While we will briefly touch in on the skill of drumming and singing at the same time and any relevant hand drum technique, our main focus will be on the creative and arrangement aspects of making rhythms, weaving in important historical / cultural awarenesses and energy medicine considerations. We will primarily orient toward supporting shorter community songs with hand drums, but the depth and breadth of what we will cover will support you in generating rhythms using any kind of traditional or unconventional drums or body percussion for a variety of song forms.<h2>If you’re ready to get creative with rhythm and expand your possibilities, please join me. </h2><h3>This workshop is for:</h3>• Anyone interested in drumming to support themselves or others singing songs• Songleaders interested in drumming to support their singing circles or who already drum while leading but would like more variety in the rhythms they play• Songleaders interested in having more understanding and language around rhythm to be better able to communicate with drummers• Hand drummers interested in more confidently coming up with rhythms for various contexts, including song circles• Songwriters interested in having more knowledge and confidence in coming up with rhythm arrangements for their songs • Music teachers or facilitators who would like to bring more depth of cultural and energetic awareness into their work<h2>May we all feel and express our essential belonging to rhythm and song! </h2><h3>IMPORTANT NOTES:</h3>Some drumming experience is recommended, but not required.All drums are welcome or you are welcome to use your hands, lap, solid surfaces, or containers for rhythm-making. I encourage you to be prepared to take notes if that supports your learning and development. I encourage you to bring a song you would be interested in me workshopping with the group. Please note: we will only have the chance to play with a few of these songs during our timeframe.This workshop will be recorded and a follow-up email will be sent to all registered participants with access to the recording . I highly encourage you to be present for the live workshop, but you are welcome to register and receive the recording if you cannot make this date and time. <h3>ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:</h3>Shireen Amini is a queer, Puerto Rican-Iranian, Earth-loving musician based in Portland, Oregon who performs conscious pop music as a solo artist and has fronted the Latin dance rock band ¡Chiringa! She has over 13 years of experience as an accompanying percussionist and facilitating youth and adult drumming groups. She received her B.A. in Ethnomusicology at UCLA with a focus in Afro-Latin percussion and in 2005, studied abroad in Cusco, Perú where she learned how to play the Afro-Peruvian cajón. Since, Shireen has studied drum circle facilitation with Arthur Hull, the father of the drum circle movement, and received a certificate in Sound, Voice, and Music Healing from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. Most importantly, however, for 10 years, Shireen has developed and utilized her own experiential solo practice of drumming for deep wellness and guidance.
