Aperçu

Learn about NYC's innovative coastal defense through an experts panel discussion and exclusive site tour of ESCR with project consultants

In the coming years, the first projects born from the BIG U vision to safeguard Manhattan’s waterfront will reach completion. With even more initiatives now in design, these efforts demonstrate how resilience, done right, can generate tremendous social, economic, and environmental benefits. What lessons can we draw from an idea like the BIG U, a process like Rebuild by Design, or a realized project like East Side Coastal Resiliency (ESCR)? How might these examples help us make headway - not only for the Lower East Side, but for New York City as a whole, and for other communities around the world?

Join us for a discussion led by Michael Kimmelman, Architecture Critic, NY Times, in conversation with:

  • Kate Ascher, Author of The Works: Anatomy of a City, Holcim Foundation
  • Amy Chester, Director, Rebuild by Design
  • Damaris Reyes, Executive Director, Good Old Lower East Side (GOLES)
  • Becky Yurek, Chief Strategy Officer, NYC Dept. of Design and Construction (NYCDDC)
  • Daniel Zarrilli, Chief Climate & Sustainability Officer, Columbia University
