Meet the Instructor: You may have seen Charles Sizemore, better known as CA, creating in one of the many studios in LaunchSpace. He and his partner, Xander McDonald moved to Massachusetts from Arizona in 2017. Currently living in Belchertown, the two of them spent a good deal of time looking for a makerspace to become involved in. In December of 2021 they found LaunchSpace. CA is currently working with Xander as a general handy man. However, he went to school for Fashion Design. During his time in the major, he came to realize that the fashion industry is set up to move garments so quickly that they are disposable. This is not good for the environment and did not fit in CA’s vision or philosophy. However, CA did not wish to give up all ties with textiles. In December of 2021 when CA and Xander found LaunchSpace on Facebook, they immediately came for a visit. They quickly became members and during that first month, CA noticed that the fiber arts area of LaunchSpace was in need of organization and a steward. Without hesitation, CA stepped into the steward role, and with Xander, they began to categorize the many donated fabrics and create an orderly and user-friendly fiber arts area. Where many people see fabric as disposable, CA and Xander see an opportunity. Residents and businesses dispose of approximately 230,000 tons of textiles annually.
