About this event

I n this 3-hour course, you will learn safety protocols and artistic techniques on how to hand-turn a pen on a lathe. You will walk away with a basic introductory concept on how to operate a wood lathe and create a hand-made pen to take home.

T he instructor will demonstrate how to set up the lathe properly, how to hold the cutting tool safely, and how to finish and assemble a wooden pen. Students will then be coached through the entire process. Kits, materials, tools, and safety equipment are all provided. (Gluing and drilling will be demonstrated but this prep work will be done before class so that students can jump into turning instruction. See video for example. Students will start at this step: https://youtu.be/DN2mE4TLG-0?t=84 )

Instructor Bio: Ed Pong has been creating wood projects, including pens and end grain cutting boards, for about 10 years. He started the hobby as an artistic outlet and a way to relieve stress. When talking about ways to decompress and chill out, Ed says: "there's nothing like watching chips fly".
