Event description

MAKE IT! Students will learn how to craft a small rustic side or end table from reclaimed wood or wood flooring. You will review plans, select materials, and receive instruction and safety guidelines for the chop saw and drill. You will make their own measurements and cuts, and layout and assemble tables with glue and screws.

TAKE IT! You will then take your table home and put a plant or a cold beer on it! If you buy a Couples Ticket, then one side table will be made by the couple.

Please review all details below, including the cancellation policies, before committing to a workshop.

No prior wood working experience is necessary. All of our woodworking workshops are 18+.

Rebuilding Exchange is a 501c3 non-profit and our mission is to create a market for reclaimed building materials. We do this by diverting materials from landfills and making them accessible for reuse through our retail warehouse, by promoting sustainable deconstruction practices, by providing education and job training programs, and by creating innovative models for sustainable reuse.

Woodworking Instructors

Alex Enarson is a Chicago-based furniture builder, owner of the company GRAVE TO CRADLE, and employee at the Plant Chicago. When working in his home studio, he uses reclaimed, salvaged, and scavenged materials to build unique and functional pieces from his own designs. An amateur forester, Alex loves building with lumber made from urban wood. Alex instructs Woodworking 101 and Open Shop.

Casey is a product designer and builder. He began honing his skills as a small boy by assisting his father in the shop. Since then, he has worked as a home remodeler constructing and deconstructing houses, a book binder, and a product designer. He enjoys breathing new life into old, forgotten treasures by doing things such as adding a simple coat of paint or turning old-growth lumber into furniture full of history and character. Casey instructs Woodworking 101 & Open Shop.

Sergio started at Rebuilding Exchange as a workshop volunteer and eventually became an instructor. His patience, winsome personality, and helpful nature puts his students at ease. Sergio, who has a background in design and photo production, has experience building custom props and furniture from reclaimed items for major clients. Salvaging is in Sergio's blood, and he sits on the board for FINI, a not-for-profit organization that collects goods left over from post-production shoots. The items are donated and distributed to local charities. For kicks, Sergio thrashes on his guitar in his band. He is also an avid cyclist and a sailor, and he can be seen constantly working on his house. Sergio instructs the Make It Take it workshops.

Erin is a talented designer and woodworker. She began volunteering with RX two years ago and has since become an instructor. With an educational background in design and a woodworking start in theater sets she has built the skills to make anything from a complete 3D model of a building to a kitchen table made from RX wood. She is proud to aid the reclaimed community in Chicago and help it to grow using education as a tool. Currently, Erin works as a graphic designer in the west loop but spends as much time making furniture and functional objects out of wood and other salvaged materials. Erin teaches Woodworking 101 and a DIY class about repurposing wood trim.
