Make Do and Mend: A drop-in sewing class

Community Forklift is the DC-area’s nonprofit reuse center for home improvement supplies. We collect donations of new and gently used building materials and home essentials and make them available to the community at low cost. We also distribute free materials to nonprofits and neighbors in need, create good green jobs, and educate the public about reuse.

Make Do and Mend was a pamphlet issued by the British Ministry of Information in the midst of WWII. It was intended to provide useful tips on how to be both frugal and stylish in times of harsh rationing. Readers were advised to create pretty ‘decorative patches’ to cover holes in warn garments; unpick old jumpers to re-knit chic alternatives; turn men’s clothes into women’s; as well as darn, alter, and protect against the ‘moth menace’.

Bring in fabric items that are torn, abused or otherwise damaged and learn to repair them with the guidance of a professional sewer. Discuss upcycling options for items that can't be saved, and learn techniques that might include sewing buttons, mending holes, and embracing imperfections in this casual drop in workshop.
