MAGICAL MANDOLIN

Wednesday, July 25th, 2018, at 7 p.m.

JOYCE RASMUSSEN BALINT / mandolin
YELENA GRINBERG / piano

Dear Friends!

On Wednesday, July 25th, at 7 p.m., Joyce and I are thrilled to invite you all to join us for a very special evening of MAGICAL MANDOLIN, which will feature some of the most gorgeous works ever written for the unique combination of mandolin and piano. The alluring charm of these two instruments together has inspired many composers including Vivaldi, Beethoven, Hummel, and Calace. The all-Baroque first half of our program will showcase three Baroque delights: Vivaldi's sunny Mandolin Concerto in G Major, RV 532 (ca. 1725), Bach's impassioned Sonata in G Minor, BWV 1001 (ca. 1720), and Handel's ebullient Sonata in D Major, HWV 371 (ca. 1730). In the Classical Era, youthful Beethoven wrote a number of pieces for mandolin and piano during his sojourn in Prague for Countess and mandolinist Josephine von Clary-Aldringen, which include his sublime Adagio in E Major, WoO 43b (1796) and his spirited Andante con variazioni, WoO 44b (1796). The evocative incidental music, Peer Gynt, op. 23 (1875) by the Romantic Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg, is one of his most beloved and best known works from which he extracted eight movements to make two, four-movement suites. The enchanting Solveig's Cradle Song from Suite No. 2, op. 55 has been arranged for several instrumental combinations, perhaps most beautifully for mandolin and piano. An Italian mandolin virtuoso, luthier and composer, Raffaele Calace, wrote over 200 works for mandolin which include concert works for mandolin solo as well as chamber works for mandolin in combination with other instruments, including piano. The latter category includes his three characterful pieces: a cheerful Rondo, a melancholy Romanza, and the fiery Tarantella. We will conclude our program with Johann Nepomuk Hummel's brilliant Grande Sonate in C Major, op. 37a (1810) - one of the finest and most significant chamber music works ever written for the mandolin and piano, which unfolds in three contrasting movements: an exuberant Allegro con spirito, a heartfelt Andante moderato Siziliano, and a sparkling Rondo finale, full of virtuosic fireworks for both players alike. This special summer salon inspired by the Magical Mandolin is not-to-be-missed!!!

Joyce and I wish you a fabulous summer and look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday, July 25th!
