Machine learning has many applications in ocean science for climate action. <p><strong>Artificial Intelligence entering the Deep Blue</strong></p><p>Oceans and climate change are inextricably linked. Oceans cover over 70% of planet Earth and provide vital services to humankind, from producing the food we eat to storing the excess carbon dioxide we generate, from mitigating weather extremes to generating the oxygen we breathe. Oceans are also under severe pressure as evidenced by changes in temperature, sea level rise, biodiversity loss or through massive pollution of marine ecosystems. Technological advances in sensor technology and autonomous platforms allow marine scientists to collect data in larger volumes than ever before and enable science and management programs on all levels. Advances in the field Artificial Intelligence are well suited to support these efforts towards sustainable marine management, solving complex tasks that previously required human expertise. The presentation will provide an introduction into current challenges and advancements, exemplified by two use-cases from the portfolio of the DFKI Marine Perception department.</p>

<p><strong>The Allen Coral Atlas bleaching monitoring system</strong></p><p>The Allen Coral Atlas, a shallow coral reef map and monitoring tool, has launched a unique satellite-imagery-based global system to track coral bleaching. The system’s consistent global coverage allows for a better understanding of reef change over time, but most importantly, for large-scale conservation planning. By tracking the location, extent, and severity of potential coral reef bleaching worldwide, it will provide more accurate geospatial information on reef resilience to guide management decisions in the face of anthropogenic climate change. Combined with the Atlas’ benthic, and geomorphic maps obtained by machine learning and data processing techniques, the full suite of tools provides a comprehensive spatial and temporal system for understanding coral reefs.</p><p>This presentation will explain how the bleaching monitoring system works and the efforts behind it to gather in situ observations across a global network of reef monitors to validate and strengthen the tool. The bleaching monitoring system analyzes changes in satellite-based imagery pixel-by-pixel of coral reefs over time. Monitoring is cued by the “Bleaching Warnings” of the NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) sea surface temperature anomalies for 214 coral regions around the globe. The Atlas initiates the processing of Sentinel-2 satellite data when a region enters a level of “Bleaching Warning” or higher from the CRW, for that region on a bi-weekly basis and stops it when it goes into “No Stress”. Using Google Earth Engine (GEE), the Sentinel-2 satellite data is masked to remove pixels with clouds, shadows, or other disturbances. With the support of a global network of coral bleaching monitors the ongoing stakeholder engagement and validation process will further strengthen the Atlas detection algorithms. This innovative new tool represents a major step in our ability to support conservation efforts, promote research, and educate a new generation of scientists. This is the result of a multi-disciplinary partnership led by Arizona State University, in collaboration with Planet, University of Queensland, and the Coral Reef Alliance.</p>
