The City of Lynn and EDIC/Lynn are applying for two EPA Brownfields Grants. This meeting will share our application drafts and solicit feedback from residents about what they'd like to see in our applications or in our brownfields work more broadly.

The first grant application is for a community-wide assessment grant, which would provide funding for sites in Lynn that may have environmental contamination.

The second application is for a cleanup grant for Whyte's Laundromat, which is a vacant parcel downtown which has contamination that has affected surrounding properties. The Whyte's Laundromat site at 83 Willow Street in downtown Lynn has been a vacant and contaminated property for decades. The site of a laundry facility from the 1930s to the 1990s, the property is contaminated and the pollutants have seeped vertically into the soil and groundwater, affecting nearby properties. The plume of toxins poses a threat to the indoor air of existing and future occupied buildings in the area. The Economic Development and Industrial Corporation of Lynn (EDIC/Lynn) has leveraged nearly $1M from MassDevelopment and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to research the amount of pollution on the site and begin cleanup. Our efforts seem to be working, but more work is needed to clean the site. With a grant from MassDevelopment, we recently conducted a visioning effort with the community to better understand what Lynners would like to see as the end use for the affected parcels.
