LONGPLAYER LEGACIES: FUTURESELF

Ella Finer and The Longplayer Trust

Longplayer Legacies is a concert series hosting three extraordinary composers (Larry Achiampong, Laura Cannell, and Vanessa Brown) re-composing, re- interpreting Longplayer’s score/music over three nights in October 2018. These will be held at the Lighthouse in London’s Trinity Buoy Wharf, (from which Jem Finer’s 1000-year long composition Longplayer plays continuously: longplayer.org) for an intimate audience onsite and a livestream audience hosted by soundandmusic.org.
Curated by Ella Finer as a Sound and Music Composer-Curator 2018, these concerts are a repsonse to Longplayer’s ethos of caring for the long term alongside her own work as a producer and curator interested in re-mix, cross-temporal splicing and the politics of doing so. The idea for these sessions is to ask how sound legacies are produced and who creates them? Further who ensures their "preservation" and how? Who knows where to look for these legacies-who feels entitled to creatively and critically attend to these materials?
On 11 October 2018 FutureSelf (Vanessa Brown) will be premiering her new music commission.

Vanessa Brown has a long history in music, beginning with an extensive career as pop artist V V Brown. With half a million records sales and over 10 million streams V V Brown has now set up her new project; FutureSelf. The FutureSelf Project is an immersive, multi disciplinary practice which explores controversial subjects in and around the social sciences through visual arts and music. 
FutureSelf began with her director debut of the ground-breaking music video Sacrifice. Through the use of prosthetic makeup the artist in the video became a white woman exploring the concept of dual consciousness and racism. Gaining attention from British news channels and media, the video has since been exhibited internationally. 
For Longplayer Legacies, FutureSelf has composed a 30 minute piece using her infamous one string guitar reflecting on time and social behaviour. She will duet with the score using voice, brass and archival audio alongside her sister, Amaroun, playing escalated drone sounds on her electric guitar.

This concert is a standing event, taking place in an old lighthouse with a steep narrow staircase. The venue is not wheelchair accessible and has very limited seating.
