From planning, design, and repair, how are people tackling decarbonization? This panel delves deep into how Long Beach folks approach embodied carbon in their work.

Speakers

Carline Hua, Planner, City of Long Beach Community Development Planning Bureau

Carline Hua began her career in the City of Long Beach as a Management Assistant working on special projects across different departments. She currently is a Planner for the Planning Bureau, Department of Community Development working on both current and advance planning projects that include implementation of the Long Beach Climate Action Plan. Prior to the City of Long Beach, Carline worked as an intern for the City of Dana Point’s Planning Division and City of San Diego’s Stormwater Department. Ms. Hua holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Systems with a concentration on Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution and minor in Law and Society from the University of California, San Diego. She also received a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the University of California, Irvine.

Matthew Wister, Director & Senior Associate, Studio One Eleven

With an interest in sustainability, Matt has led many adaptive reuse and transformative developments within Studio One Eleven including 200 Ocean (office to housing conversion), OSO (abandoned department store to food hall), and the Balboa Fun Zone (helping to make an old entertainment zone young again).

Daniel Fox, Associate & Project Manager, MHP Structural Engineers

Daniel Fox manages one of MHP’s four Building Design & Renovation Groups and plays a significant role in supporting a wide breadth of projects including those in the education, office, multi-family housing, industrial, medical, and retail sectors. Dan is also heavily involved in recruiting for the firm, business development, and the production and progression of the company’s standards. Dan holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, is a California licensed Civil and Structural Engineer, and a certified disaster service worker through the California OES Safety Assessment Program. Dan has served as the chairperson of several committees of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (SEAOSC) and has served on the Board of Directors. Dan is a three-time recipient of the SEAOSC Above & Beyond Presidential Certificate of Appreciation Award. Dan has also been a recipient of Building Design & Construction Magazine’s 40 Under 40 award.

Alex Sassoon, Studio Leader, P2S

Alex Sassoon has served as the Electrical Engineer of Record and Project Manager for a variety of education, laboratory, commercial office, sports, and entertainment facilities. Alex has served as the leader of the P2S Net Zero Team and the electrical lead of the P2S Decarbonization Working Group, focusing on plug load analysis and control, daylighting, and embodied and operational carbon of MEP systems. Alex is the chair of the USGBC-California Long Beach Branch and a steering committee member with the AIA Long Beach/South Bay Committee on the Environment. Alex received his Bachelor of Arts in environmental studies with a minor in electrical engineering from UC Santa Cruz.
