VPFA Third Sex Reading Group

We will be looking at the conservatism of Mary Shelley's Lodore

Mary Shelley’s Lodore (1835) marks a departure from the first-person confessional narratives and sweeping historical fictions she published earlier in her career. Set in contemporary England and America, Lodore features a third-person narration that anticipates fiction of the Victorian period. A silver fork novel in which “A Mother &amp; Daughter are the heroines” (Shelley, 1995: 185), Lodore seems to differ in theme, genre, and setting from Shelley’s previous work. Some readers have regarded it as proof of her descent into conservativism and commercialism in her late career. But how conservative is Lodore really? Can we find any continuities between Lodore and her earlier work? And what is significant about Shelley’s depiction of female relationships, or of femininity itself? In this group we will discuss these questions, and many more, as we shine a light on Shelley’s underappreciated fifth novel.
