Many voted to ‘take back control’ - but what is this control - & what does 'locality' mean in an age of globalization?

Many voted to ‘take back control’ – but what is this control, and where is it taken? If ‘local’ is the priority, what does this mean in an age of global networks and mobilities? This session follows on the ‘Local-co-governance’ workshop in 2020: and the challenges raised on scale, complexity, exclusion, controversy and alternative truths. Here the focus is on the ‘smart-wise’ governance – a very practical agenda on how technology can enable (or possibly disable) the ‘collective local intelligence’. So we first explore some huge but practical questions;•	How would a ‘smart-wise-locality’ Manchester (or other), look and work in 2050? •	What are the possible implications of the pandemic &amp; what can we learn?•	How to design ‘smarter’ socio-technical systems to avoid inequality etc, and enable ‘wiser’ forms of local community development &amp; empowerment?This session brings together leading ‘thinkers &amp; doers’ on smart-wise governance. The practical contribution comes from current local experiments in Manchester and the northwest region.
