*NOTE! This is a 2 Day Class!

FRIDAY = 7PM - 9PM

SATURDAY = 12PM - 4PM

A two-day introductory class to be held at Staten Island Makerspace / MakerParkRadio focusing on Live Sound setup and mixing. Students will learn how to set up a stage for a live band (mics / cables / amps), set up a PA, and a multi-channel Mixer. Students will have an opportunity to set up and mix a live band on the final day of the class.

All of the students will have hands-on experience and learn about proper mic placement and how to get the best sound from a band in different spaces. The class will also focus on signal flow and basic recording possibilities.

Day 1:

  • Introduction to gear, microphones, cables (XLR vs Instrument vs Speaker cables) , mixing board, mic stands, amplifiers, and PA speakers
  • Signal Flow: the basics of getting a sound from source to PA speaker system
  • The proper way to wrap a cable to ensure long life!

Day 2:

  • Microphone technique: how to mic up a drum set, guitar and bass amp, vocals
  • How to set up a mix on a mixing board and how to get a balanced sound and mix in a particular space
  • How to interact with an artist and not get in their way. It is all about making the artist feel comfortable, allowing them to perform with ease.

Day 3:

  • A practical live mix scenario. We will have a band/artist come in and have them set up their gear and we will treat this all as a real live scenario. All in real time.
  • We will even be recording the live session to share with everyone.

The class will be taught by Daniel de Lara, Darrell de Lara, and Tom Ferrie.

Daniel de Lara is a music producer and session bassist & guitarist. He has played on tracks by Chromeo, Jacques Greene, Lunice, and Disasterpeace. He also has scored films by director Orson Oblowitz such as “Showdown at the Grand” featuring Terrence Howard & Dolph Lundgren. He has made music for the fashion designer Peter Do and Vogue China.

Darrell de Lara is music producer, sound engineer, and video editor.

Both brothers have a band Goodnight and are releasing their second album this year.

Tom Ferrie is the co-founder of MakerParkRadio, and has done the live sound for all of the MakerParkRadio events for the past 6 years. Tom grew up with a love for stereo’s and got started with tech stuff by setting up different stereo systems and experimenting with sounds. In 2017, Tom designed and built the MakerParkRadio studio. Although Tom has no formal training, he has learned a lot from people along the way, and looks forward to learning more in the future!

This event is for people 16 years of age and older.
