🌟 Hello all, very excited to be back for Scratch Day this year LIVE & IN-PERSON at Vernier with SPECIAL GUEST Algorithmar* (or Maren) from the Scratch Team.

Since ScratchEdPDX was a personal initiative by Rick and me, and we're currently both on the OCSTA Leadership board, ScratchEdPDX teacher meetups are now officially an OCSTA event!

📅 What's New?

Our bi-monthly educator meetups are designed to forge strong local connections in the CS & educator community, introduce teachers to what's going on regionally in the creative coding spaces, and unlock educational and professional opportunities for ourselves and students!!!

🎙 Agenda for the Afternoon:

ScratchEd Meetups are informal gatherings for educators who work with (or are interested in working with) Scratch! This generally caters to the 5th-10th grade CS teacher range.

We start with networking over light refreshments, getting to know fellow attendees, and sharing what people want to explore during the meetup.

Our guest Maren will give a short presentation on some of her favorite Scratch-related topics!

We then collaboratively decide how to structure our learning and then form small groups based on our different interests. Maybe you want to have a discussion about classroom strategies or get more practice with Scratch—or something else entirely. Feel free to move between groups if the session you're in isn't working for you!

After our sessions, we gather as a whole group for sharing. You might pose a question to discuss with the group or share something from your classroom. This is a great time to inspire and be inspired!

🎮 CS Guest of the Month:

Maren Vernon AKA Algorithmar*

No matter the job, I often found myself creating training manuals, filming instructional videos, and thinking a lot about how to empower my learning audience and the tools they needed for success. Now, combining my twin passions for education and coding, I work with the Scratch Foundation’s Programs team as a Learning Resource Designer, developing new creative learning resources and engagement experiences for Scratchers and educators. As a lifelong learner, I embrace the 4P’s (Projects, Passions, Peers, and Play) and can often be found tinkering on anything from crafts to 3D printing to robots to emerging technologies, along with my favorite pursuit of solving coding mysteries! What Should You Bring?

- Curiosity.

- Excitement.

- A device to create on will be helpful!
