Since launching LINE in June 2011, LINE Apps has grown into a global service used in 230 countries, ranking first in the free app category in 6 countries with more than 400 million users. LINE also includes a wide array of social elements such as fun and Clova AI (a personal Home assistant), expressive stickers, web advertisement, and numerous LINE family apps, including LINE games and web services .LINE Fukuoka Corporation has placed the core of it's business on its services and actively pushed for further expansion on a global scale, as well as accelerating the development of LINE as a platform.

Session 1 - Web services at LINE by Koji Lin


There are a wide array of services at Line which sit outside our core messaging infrastructure. These services provide support for some apps like Line Pay, Line Live, Fortune Teller, Part-time job finder etc. In this presentation I am going to briefly introduce some of them and the services that my team is responsible for 1) our architecture 2) challenges and lessons learned while recently migrating from sync to async 3) and lastly some of the middleware tools we use to serve millions of requests per day.

Session 2 - LINE's messaging service architecture underlying 220 million monthly active users, and core techs by Yuto Kawamura

 

LINE is a messaging service with 220 million monthly active users. Our messaging service architecture is keep evolving every day and now we have various components collaborating each other, which are developed upon unique technologies. In this talk we'll introduce the overview of LINE's messaging service architecture, and few core technologies that we're heavily being involved, such as Netty based RPC framework Armeria and Apache Kafka.

Speaker Profiles


Koji Lin
Koji Lin came from Taiwan to work as a team leader/software engineer for LINE Fukuoka in Japan. His primary focus is Java on the server side, but he also has experience as a android/iOS application engineer. Before leaving Taiwan, he was the organizer of Taiwan Java User Group and help organizing annual conference in Taiwan (jcconf.tw)

Yuto Kawamura
Yuto Kawamura is a Senior software Engineer working at LINE. Recently he is leading a project which aims to redesign LINE's services architecture with putting Apache Kafka into the central of architecture, expecting it to be an another layer of service to service communication that provides reliable, scalable and asynchronous data transfer path. He is actively working also as an Apache Kafka contributor and can find his work on GitHub
