Course: Lighting &amp; Listings – (1) HSW Credit Course Number: AIA_NS_0004 About this Course This course examines lighting requirements and the appropriate testing required for luminaires that allow safety for the occupants in institutional settings such as healthcare, behavioral health, cleanroom, schools, correctional, and transportation settings. Prerequisite Knowledge: The audience should have a working knowledge of designing institutional buildings and transportation applications and understand the requirements of those spaces for the health and safety of the occupants. HSW Justification: The testing and listings required for institutional settings were developed with the safety of the occupants in mind. In these environments, protecting the end user is the primary concern, whether to address infection control in healthcare, safe lighting in surgical suites or MRIs for both the caretaker and patient alike, lighting for safe egress for students in schools, or the appropriate lighting and listings required for tunnels and underpasses so the driver can safely enter and exit a tunnel or underpass in a transportation setting. This course will examine each institutional application and the appropriate luminaire listings and standards required to ensure the health, safety and welfare for the public users of these built environments. Learning Objective 1: Following this session, participants will be able to describe how luminaires are tested per LM-79 ad LM-80 requirements and how that data provides pertinent information for proper specification in an institutional setting for health, safety and overall user welfare. Learning Objective 2: Following this session, participants will be able to identify the proper environmental listing for a luminaire in a healthcare application to ensure safe operation with other electronic equipment, especially critical in areas like healthcare where life monitoring equipment or other electronic devices are used on a patient. Learning Objective 3: Following this presentation, participants will be able to identify the environmental challenges and best practices in design for vandal-prone applications such as schools, where providing a safe environment for the users with proper illumination is the primary design goal. Learning Objective 4: Following this presentation, participants will recognize how sealed luminaires can protect users of a space from harmful infectious diseases in a hospital setting or cleanroom biosafety lab and the listings required for those applications.

Speaker Bio: Paige Torre-Toujouse is the Regional Sales Manager for New Star Lighting. She joined New Star in 2024 and covers 13 states in her Central regional territory. Toujouse joined New Star with a career history of specification sales in New Orleans where she worked with architects, interior designers, electrical engineers, and end-users. Her experience in outside sales helped her develop a deep understanding of lighting trends and controls. Toujouse is an excellent communicator, is customer-centric, and takes pride in the relationships she has developed. She is also committed to sustainability and often advocates for energy-efficient lighting plans that reduce environmental impact while maximizing performance. Outside of work, Paige enjoys baking, yoga, and a good comedy.
