American Red Cross Lifeguarding Recertification

Upon successful completion, each participant will be able to:

  • Perform water rescues to active drowning victims, unconscious victims and victims with spinal injuries.
  • Perform primary and secondary assessments to identify both life threatening and non life-threatening conditions.
  • Perform CPR while using an AED.
  • This course is designed for those who already hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.

This course is hosted at an OUTDOOR training facility. Within four weeks of the first day of class, course details will be emailed out to the same email address used at the time of registration. This will include all details for the class.

All recertification participants MUST hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification (or one no more than 30 days expired) in order to participate in a renewal. In order to verify this, participants can check the status of their American Red Cross certification by visiting https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/digital-certificate. Renewals recertify each participant for another two years.

All sales final, no refunds. Limited seats.

Please Note: All recertification participants MUST hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification (or one no more than 30 days expired) in order to participate in a renewal.

In order to verify this, participants can check the status of their American Red Cross certification by visiting https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/digital-certificate.

Participants will be asked to bring a PAPER COPY of their certification to the course day for records.

Even though the class is a review, participants must also pass the prerequisite skills for the program. Failure to successfully complete the prerequisite screening will result in failure, and no refunds will be issued. Note that these skills have changed with the course's 2024 revision. The prerequisite screening consists of the following:

  1. Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
  • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed)
  • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs
  • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.

  1. Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed).
  • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10–pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
  • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
