About this event

Demonstrate your ability to swim and join our team as a Water Safety Swim Instructor or Life guard.

Tryouts for either position are EVERY Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00pm at the Old Colony YMCA - Stoughton Branch

Potential swim instructors will be tested on the prerequisites for the Water Safety Instructor Course:

Pass swim skills evaluation:

  • Candidates must demonstrate and proficiently complete 25 yards of the following strokes: front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, side stroke, elementary backstroke, and butterfly
  • Maintain back float for 1 minute
  • Maintain treading water for 1 minute

Potential Lifeguards, come see if you can complete the skills test included in most lifeguard trainings. if you are thinking of applying as a lifeguard, want to practice before your upcoming course, or are just curious to see if you have what it takes, this class is for you!

  • You will be tested with 200 yard swim (about 4 laps/ 8 lengths)
  • a 2 minute tread (treading water without use of your hands)
  • retrieval of a 10 pound brick from the deepest part of our pool.

if you complete all skills successfully, you can comfortably apply to be a lifeguard at our Y. We provide the training!

(Candidates must be at least 16 years of age by the end of training to be considered for hire.)
