Let's Talk: Justice in the time of COVID-19
Spanish translation will be provided. See Spanish language invite here. / Se proporcionará traducción al español. Vea la invitación en español aquí.
Join us for an online discussion with Buncombe County justice system representatives and community partners. People in jails and detention centers are at high risk of infection from COVID-19. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Buncombe County has reduced the local jail population by 40%. In this webinar, we will hear about the work being done to release and support people returning from jail during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to prevent people entering the jail unnecessarily.
In this webinar, we hope to inform community members of current measures and to respond to questions and concerns. We hope community members with pending charges, loved ones in jail, or COVID-related concerns will join this conversation.
Panelists will discuss how Buncombe County has been working to reduce the number of people in jail while protecting public safety before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, changes being made by the justice system in order to prevent the spread of infection, collaboration with community organizations to facilitate release, and lessons learned that could be sustained beyond the pandemic.
There will be time for a brief Q & A at the end of the webinar. We also encourage community members to submit their questions and comments here. Information gathered in this meeting will be shared with justice system leaders, community partners, and used to inform next steps in the Safety and Justice Challenge.
Panelists will include:
-
Lori Anderson, Judicial District Manager at NC Department of Public Safety (Probation)
-
Robert Thomas, Racial Justice Coalition Community Liaison
-
Meredith Pressley, Assistant District Attorney
-
LeAnn Melton, Chief Public Defender
-
Tony Gould, Major, Detention Division of Buncombe County Sheriff's Office
-
Moderated by J Hackett, Executive Director of Jordan Peer Recovery, Inc.
