About this event

  • Event lasts 1 day 9 hours

This 2-day workshop will focus on everything related to lethal bronzing (LB). The first day will focus exclusively on the pathogen causes LB and cover topics such as symptom recognition, host range, and management options. Additionally, there will be a live demon on how to inject palms with OTC and how to properly sample the palm. Finally, a tour of the facility will be conducted to show the impact of the disease and scout for symptomatic palms.

The second day will focus entirely on the vector, Haplaxius crudus. Topics will covere basic ascpects of the insects biology as well as how to identify it and how to sample for it. There will be a field and lab section to cover trap placemet and observe physical specimens under the microscope.

Registration will include:

1) breakfast and lunch for both days

2) coupon for 1 phytoplasma diagnostic test

3) yellow sticky trap of vector detection

4) digital copy of all slides and literature from vector lab

5) notepad

6) 4 CEUs maxs in the following sections: Ornamental and Turf Pest Control, Commercial Lawn and Ornamental, Regulatory Inspection and Sampling

Dr. Bahder is an assistant professor at the University of Florida and studies insect vector ecology in ornamental plants.  His primary research focus is identification of the vector or vectors of Texas Phoenix Palm Decline in Florida and better understanding the biology of the causal pathogen to aide in better sampling/monitoring strategies and ultimately develop management options.
